South Korea has a remarkable ability to make even an ordinary journey feel like part of the adventure. One morning, you could be wandering through Seoul's historic palaces; a few hours later, enjoying Busan's spectacular coastline or exploring the ancient streets of Gyeongju.
Thanks to its efficient railway network, affordable coaches and modern public transport, discovering the country is easier than many first-time visitors expect. The real trick is knowing when to pay for speed, when to choose a cheaper alternative and how to avoid unnecessary travel expenses.

See More Of Korea By Train

High-speed rail is perfect for travellers who want to visit several cities without spending entire days on the road. The KTX connects Seoul with major destinations including Busan, Daegu and Gyeongju.
The journey from Seoul to Busan takes approximately two and a half hours, with standard tickets costing around €36. Slower trains provide a more economical alternative, particularly for those travelling without a strict schedule.
For a memorable journey, consider stopping in Gyeongju, where ancient royal tombs, Buddhist temples and traditional architecture offer a fascinating contrast to South Korea's modern cities.

Why Buses Are Worth Considering

While trains receive much of the attention, South Korea's intercity coaches are often more convenient for reaching smaller destinations.
A standard bus between Seoul and Busan costs approximately €19–€20, while more spacious premium services cost around €29. The journey usually takes four to five hours, depending on traffic.
Coaches also connect towns that lack direct railway services, making them particularly useful for exploring the countryside.

Navigate Seoul Like A Local

Seoul's extensive underground network makes it possible to explore everything from traditional markets to fashionable neighbourhoods without relying on expensive taxis.
A typical journey costs around €1.05 using a rechargeable transport card. Cards such as Tmoney can also be used on many buses and in taxis.
For planning routes, Naver Map and KakaoMap are especially useful. Both provide detailed public transport directions and help visitors navigate unfamiliar neighbourhoods.

Make Airport Transfers Simple

After arriving at Incheon International Airport, the Airport Railroad Express offers a straightforward connection to Seoul.
The all-stop service takes approximately one hour and costs around €3.20. Travellers who prefer a quicker journey can choose the non-stop express train, which reaches Seoul Station in about 43 minutes for approximately €8.70.
Airport coaches are another convenient choice, particularly when carrying large suitcases. Typical fares are around €11–€12.

Escape To Jeju Island

For a change of scenery, consider adding Jeju to your itinerary. Known for volcanic landscapes, waterfalls and beautiful coastal trails, the island feels wonderfully different from mainland Korea.
Flights from Seoul take approximately one hour, making Jeju suitable for a short extension to your holiday.
Public buses serve major attractions, but hiring a car can make exploring remote beaches and mountain areas more convenient.

Plan A Smarter Korean Adventure

For a first visit, seven to ten days provides enough time to combine Seoul with Gyeongju and Busan. Travellers with additional time can include Jeju or explore lesser-known regional destinations.
Book popular intercity journeys ahead of major holidays, keep a rechargeable transport card handy and compare train and bus prices before choosing a route.
South Korea rewards curious travellers with an impressive variety of experiences. By combining comfortable trains, affordable coaches and convenient local transport, you can discover much more of the country without stretching your holiday budget.
