Electric vehicle sales around the world delivered a mixed result in September 2026. Europe recorded its strongest month yet, while North America and China experienced noticeable declines compared with the previous year.
The contrast shows how differently major markets are developing, even as electric vehicles become a more familiar choice for drivers. Worldwide sales still reached more than two million units, but the latest figures suggest that growth is becoming less consistent across regions.
Global Sales Reach 2.15 Million
According to data from Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, approximately 2.15 million electric vehicles were sold worldwide in September 2026. This included battery-powered cars and plug-in hybrid models. The total was 17% higher than in August but 2% lower than in September 2025.
The monthly increase offered some positive news after a slower period during the summer. However, the annual comparison marked the end of six consecutive months of global growth. Despite the September decline, the market remained ahead over the longer term.
During the first nine months of 2026, worldwide electric vehicle sales reached 15.5 million units, representing a 3% increase from the same period a year earlier. This indicates that demand has not disappeared, although the pace of expansion differs considerably depending on the market.
Europe Reaches a New High
Europe was the strongest performer in September, with sales approaching 600,000 vehicles. The result represented a 39% increase compared with the same month in 2025 and established a new monthly record for the region. Battery electric vehicles played an important role in the improvement. Their sales increased by 50% year over year, while plug-in hybrid models recorded a 16% rise.
The stronger performance of fully electric vehicles suggests that more buyers are considering models that operate entirely on battery power. Several individual markets also delivered impressive results. France recorded almost 80,000 electric vehicle sales, an increase of 78% compared with September last year. Germany reached approximately 117,000 units, representing growth of 61%.
The United Kingdom, France, Spain, Portugal, and Finland each reported their highest monthly electric vehicle sales on record. These results suggest that Europe's progress is not limited to one country. Instead, demand has strengthened across several important markets.
North America Experiences a Sharp Drop
North America recorded a very different result. Electric vehicle sales fell 44% compared with September 2025, marking the region's steepest annual decline of the year. Sales also decreased by 8% from August. The comparison with the previous year is important when interpreting this result. September 2025 was an unusually strong month for purchases, making the latest annual figure appear especially weak.
For the first nine months of 2026, North American sales were down 24% compared with the same period in 2025. The figures show that the region is facing a more difficult market environment than Europe, where demand continued to expand.
China Records Lower Domestic Sales
China remained one of the world's largest electric vehicle markets, with approximately 1.11 million units sold in September. However, the total was 18% lower than a year earlier, and the decline was wider than the previous month's comparison. Sales did improve by 7% compared with August, offering a small sign of recovery within the month. Even so, the market remained 13% below its year-to-date level from the previous year.
The performance also differed between vehicle types. Plug-in hybrid sales in China were down 25% over the first nine months of 2026, while battery electric vehicle sales declined by a smaller 6%. This suggests that fully electric models have been more resilient than plug-in hybrids in the country's current market conditions.
Chinese manufacturers also continued to send more vehicles overseas. Passenger new-energy vehicle exports reached a monthly record of 558,000 units in September. This development highlights the growing importance of international customers for manufacturers operating in China.
Why Regional Differences Matter
The September figures show that electric vehicle demand cannot be understood through a single global number. Europe is expanding quickly, while North America and China are experiencing weaker annual comparisons. Each region has its own customer preferences, market conditions, vehicle availability, and purchasing patterns.
September 2026 was an important month for the global electric vehicle market, but its results were far from uniform. Europe's record performance provided a strong example of expanding demand, while weaker figures in North America and China showed that the industry still faces regional challenges.
With worldwide sales reaching 15.5 million units during the first nine months, the longer-term market remained ahead of 2025. The coming months will reveal whether Europe's momentum can continue and whether the slower regions can regain a stronger pace. For manufacturers and buyers alike, regional trends will remain essential to understanding the next stage of electric vehicle growth.
