Brandon McNulty produced one of the most memorable performances of the 2026 UCI Road World Championships, winning the elite men's road race in Montreal on 27 September.
The 28-year-old American launched a decisive attack with approximately 33 kilometres remaining and resisted a determined pursuit to cross the finish line alone.
His achievement ended a 33-year wait for an American victory in the men's event. The previous winner from the United States was Lance Armstrong, who claimed the title in Oslo in 1993.
A Dramatic Finish In Montreal
The 273.4-kilometre race challenged competitors with demanding climbs, repeated accelerations and unpredictable changes at the front of the field.
McNulty seized his opportunity during the closing stages, breaking away from a group of leading contenders.
At one point, his advantage approached a minute, but the chasing riders refused to surrender.
British cyclist Tom Pidcock helped intensify the pursuit, briefly reducing the American's lead to a narrow margin.
Despite considerable fatigue, McNulty maintained enough momentum to complete the race in six hours, 17 minutes and four seconds.
Australian Michael Matthews finished second, 13 seconds behind the winner, while Dutch rider Mathieu van der Poel secured bronze.
How The Race Unfolded
The championship featured several of cycling's biggest names, including Remco Evenepoel, Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel.
With approximately 90 kilometres remaining, a strong group established a breakaway on the challenging Voie Camillien-Houde climb.
Repeated attacks fragmented the field and forced riders to make difficult decisions about when to pursue their rivals.
Evenepoel, one of the pre-race favourites, struggled to overcome complicated team tactics despite having won the individual time trial earlier in the championships.
Van der Poel continued attacking, while other contenders attempted to regain contact.
McNulty eventually took advantage of the uncertainty, launching the decisive move that secured his victory.
A Remarkable American Achievement
McNulty became only the third American man to win the elite world road race title, following Greg LeMond and Lance Armstrong.
LeMond previously claimed victories in 1983 and 1989.
The latest triumph also highlighted the strength of the American national team.
Quinn Simmons finished fourth, while Matteo Jorgenson took eighth place, giving the United States three riders inside the top ten.
McNulty, who rides professionally for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, had already established himself as a talented all-rounder, but this victory represented the greatest achievement of his career.
After crossing the finish line, he expressed disbelief at having survived the final kilometres.
Michael Matthews Celebrates A Comeback
Although McNulty claimed the rainbow jersey, Australia's Michael Matthews also had considerable reason to celebrate.
The experienced cyclist returned to the world championship podium after a difficult period involving serious health problems and injuries.
Matthews had previously suffered a pulmonary embolism and later broke both wrists in a training accident.
His silver medal marked a significant personal recovery.
It was also his fourth medal in the elite men's world road race, following silver in 2015 and bronze medals in 2017 and 2022.
More Success At The Championships
The women's elite road race produced another dramatic conclusion.
Dutch cyclist Demi Vollering secured victory ahead of Poland's Katarzyna Niewiadoma.
Vollering subsequently received a fine, a points deduction and a yellow card for a breach of racing-position regulations, but her victory remained unchanged.
The two races demonstrated the physical demands and unpredictable nature of championship cycling.
What The Victory Means
McNulty's success represents an important moment for American cycling and adds another chapter to the country's world championship history.
As the new champion, he earns the right to wear the distinctive rainbow jersey in road races throughout the following year.
His victory also demonstrates how persistence, intelligent timing and individual determination can overcome even the strongest fields.
For spectators in Montreal, the championship delivered an unforgettable finish, while McNulty transformed an ambitious attack into a historic achievement.
