Northern Albania is home to some of Europe's most spectacular mountain scenery. Known as the Accursed Mountains, the Albanian Alps combine dramatic limestone peaks, emerald valleys and traditional villages where life moves at a gentler pace.
This four-day adventure takes travellers from historic Shkodër across Lake Koman to Valbonë, before crossing a magnificent mountain pass into Theth. With affordable guesthouses, welcoming locals and extraordinary landscapes, it is an ideal escape for adventurous travellers.

Day One: Explore Historic Shkodër

Begin in Shkodër, approximately two hours north of Tirana by road. This charming city is the main gateway to Albania's northern mountains.
Wander along its colourful pedestrian streets before visiting the Marubi National Museum of Photography, which offers a fascinating glimpse into Albanian history.
Another worthwhile stop is Rozafa Castle, perched above the city. Its ancient walls provide panoramic views of Lake Shkodër, surrounding rivers and distant mountains.
Spend the evening enjoying traditional Albanian cuisine. A satisfying restaurant meal costs approximately €10–€15, while comfortable guesthouses generally charge €25–€50 per night.

Day Two: Cruise Across Lake Koman

Leave Shkodër early for Lake Koman, one of Albania's most remarkable natural attractions.
The ferry crosses a narrow reservoir surrounded by towering cliffs, forested slopes and isolated mountain settlements. Its turquoise waters and dramatic scenery create an unforgettable journey.
After reaching Fierzë, continue by minibus towards Valbonë, a peaceful village surrounded by spectacular alpine peaks.
The combined journey, including road transfers and ferry tickets, generally costs €25–€35 per person.
Spend the afternoon exploring the valley, photographing traditional houses and enjoying the mountain atmosphere.
Family-run guesthouses usually cost €25–€45 per person, sometimes including breakfast and dinner. Confirm meal arrangements when booking.

Day Three: Hike From Valbonë To Theth

The highlight of this itinerary is the spectacular hike between Valbonë and Theth.
The route crosses Valbonë Pass at approximately 1,800 metres, revealing breathtaking views of jagged limestone mountains, forests and deep valleys.
Allow six to nine hours for the crossing, depending on your fitness, weather conditions and starting point.
The trail includes steep climbs, rocky sections and uneven terrain. Proper hiking footwear, sufficient water and a waterproof jacket are essential.
Start early and arrange a packed lunch with your guesthouse, typically costing €5–€8.
After descending into Theth, settle into a traditional mountain guesthouse. Accommodation generally costs €25–€45 per person, depending on facilities and included meals.

Day Four: Discover Theth's Natural Beauty

Spend your final morning exploring Theth, one of Albania's most picturesque mountain villages.
Visit its charming stone tempel, surrounded by dramatic peaks, before following the trail towards Grunas Waterfall.
The waterfall tumbles over a rocky cliff into a beautiful natural setting, making it a rewarding excursion for nature lovers.
Travellers with additional time can explore the Blue Eye of Theth, a remarkable turquoise spring surrounded by forest. This longer hike is better suited to an extended stay.
Return to Shkodër by shared minibus, usually costing approximately €12–€15 per person. Reserve your seat in advance, as departures are limited.

When Is The Best Time To Visit?

June to September generally offers the best conditions for hiking in the Albanian Alps.
July and August bring warmer temperatures and busier guesthouses, while September offers quieter trails and pleasant scenery.
Mountain weather can change rapidly, and snow may remain on higher sections into early summer. Always check trail conditions before attempting the Valbonë–Theth crossing.

How Much Does The Trip Cost?

A four-day adventure typically costs €180–€280 per person, excluding international flights and travel to Albania.
This budget covers simple guesthouses, traditional meals, shared transport and modest sightseeing expenses.
Carry sufficient cash before entering the mountains, as ATMs are scarce and many guesthouses cannot accept cards.
With its spectacular landscapes, welcoming villages and memorable hiking routes, northern Albania offers an extraordinary adventure at a surprisingly affordable price.
