Europe’s autumn season stretches much longer than many travellers expect. Because forests, mountains and vineyards change colour at different times, it is possible to follow the season from September into November.

From Slovenia and Germany to Portugal and Croatia, these destinations combine vivid foliage with walking routes, historic sights and practical attractions worth adding to an autumn itinerary.

Lake Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled becomes considerably calmer once the summer crowds begin to fade. The 6km circuit around the lake takes about 90 minutes on foot and offers constant views of wooded hills turning yellow and red.

A traditional pletna boat to Bled Island costs €20 return for adults and €10 for children aged 4–12. Boats operate from 10am to 7pm through September.

Bavarian Alps, Germany

In Bavaria, autumn colours appear first at higher elevations around September before moving into the valleys later in the season. Füssen makes a practical base for mountain walks and a visit to Neuschwanstein Castle.

Standard castle admission in 2026 is €21, with a €2.50 booking fee for online tickets. Booking ahead is recommended because daily availability can be limited.

Lake District, England

Buttermere and Coniston Water are among the strongest choices for autumn scenery in England’s Lake District. Forests and hills are reflected in the lakes on calm mornings, and many of the best walking routes are completely free.

For the quietest experience, arrive early and allow several hours for a lakeside walk rather than trying to cover several locations in one day.

Transylvania, Romania

The Carpathian Mountains provide a long autumn season because forests change at different times depending on altitude. Brasov is a convenient base for exploring the region and nearby Bran Castle.

A standard Bran Castle ticket currently costs 100 lei, roughly €19, and includes access to the castle and Royal Park. In September, entry is available from 12pm to 7pm on Mondays and 9am to 7pm from Tuesday to Sunday.

Perthshire, Scotland

Perthshire combines waterfalls, woodland and some of Scotland’s richest autumn colours. Pitlochry hosts the Enchanted Forest from 8 October to 8 November 2026. Tickets for the light and sound event start at about €33 for adults and €18 for children, with shuttle transport included.

The Dolomites, Italy

The Dolomites become especially striking in October, when larch trees turn golden beneath pale mountain peaks. Lago di Braies and Lago di Sorapis are among the most photogenic places to see the contrast.

As of 16 September 2026, advance parking reservations are no longer required at Lago di Braies. Travellers can drive directly to the parking areas, although spaces may still fill during busy periods.

Loire Valley, France

The Loire Valley offers a different kind of autumn scenery, with vineyards turning red, orange and purple around historic estates.

Chateau de Chaumont-sur-Loire is particularly atmospheric at this time of year. Standard admission costs €21 through the end of 2026, while reduced tickets are €13.

Lapland, Finland

Lapland’s autumn arrives early, bringing yellow birch forests and increasingly dark evenings. Rovaniemi is an easy base, while the surrounding lakes can provide excellent reflections of both foliage and, when conditions cooperate, the northern lights.

Temperatures can already fall below freezing, so winter layers are essential even before the main snow season begins.

Douro Valley, Portugal

The Douro Valley stays colourful well into November as terraced vineyards shift from green to deep red and gold.

A short Six Bridges cruise in Porto starts at about €18, while longer full-day trips into the Douro Valley generally begin around €72–76.

Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of Europe’s most dramatic autumn destinations, with 16 lakes surrounded by beech and oak forests.

Adults admission costs €40 until the end of September, then falls to €23 throughout October. Visiting later in autumn therefore brings both stronger colours and lower prices.

Autumn in Europe rewards travellers who are flexible with timing. September suits higher mountains and northern regions, while October and November bring deeper colours to lower valleys, vineyards and woodland parks.
