The Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ pioneered all-aluminum construction back in the 1990s, and today even mainstream cars use it for hoods and doors. Carbon fiber is the exotic stuff
Carbon fiber takes things further, but it costs more and takes longer to produce. It is roughly half the weight of aluminum and offers incredible rigidity, which is why you will find it on cars like the McLaren 720S or the BMW i3's passenger cell. That McLaren uses a carbon fiber monocoque that weighs just 176 pounds, and it makes the car feel telepathic in direction changes. The tradeoff is price, a replacement carbon roof panel for a Porsche 911 GT3 can run you several thousand dollars, and crash repairs are not something you want to think about.
Where the weight actually goes
Engineers do not just swap materials randomly. They look at unsprung weight, which is the mass of wheels, tires, brakes, and suspension parts. Lighter unsprung weight means the suspension can react faster to bumps, keeping tires planted on the pavement. That is why you see forged aluminum wheels and carbon ceramic brakes on track-focused models. The Porsche Cayman GT4 uses forged wheels that save about 20 pounds versus cast ones, and that small change noticeably improves turn-in response.
The clever part is combining materials instead of choosing one. A car like the Ford GT uses an aluminum tub with carbon fiber body panels, giving you the structural strength where you need it and the lightweight skin everywhere else. It is not about being the lightest, it is about being light where it matters.
So next time you see a spec sheet bragging about horsepower, check the curb weight first. That number tells you more about how the car will actually feel on a back road than the engine output ever will. Go drive something light, even a Miata, and you will understand instantly why weight is the real enemy.
