Check a modern Corvette C8's center stack, the climate knobs and drive-mode dial sit just below your right elbow, so you never have to stretch or take your eyes off the road for long. The steering wheel itself is smaller than in a sedan, usually around 14 inches in diameter, and it's positioned so your arms bend at about 90 degrees. That angle reduces fatigue on a long drive and gives you finer control when you're making tiny corrections through a fast sweeper. If you have to reach for a button, the design failed.

Gauges that talk without shouting

The instrument cluster in a sports car does one job: deliver critical info at a glance. Modern cars like the BMW M4 use a digital display, but they still mimic that analog layout, keeping the tach dead center and pushing speed to the side. Steering feel is part of the layout

You can have the perfect seat and gauges, but if the wheel doesn't communicate, the cockpit fails. Hydraulic setups in older cars, like the Honda S2000, sent every pebble and camber change straight to your palms, giving you a constant stream of grip information. Modern electric systems, like the one in the Toyota GR86, have gotten close by tuning the assist curve to build weight naturally as you turn in. The wheel's position also matters, it should sit close enough that your thumbs rest on the spokes without your shoulders leaving the seatback. That stance lets you drive with your fingertips on long straights and grip hard only when you need to catch a slide.

The details that ruin a good cockpit

One bad choice can wreck an otherwise excellent layout. The Nissan GT-R's early infotainment screens were buried deep in the dash, forcing you to look down and away for navigation, which felt wrong in a car built for attack. On the flip side, the Alfa Romeo 4C strips everything to the bare minimum, no touchscreen at all, just a few toggle switches and a simple gauge, because the car's whole personality is about raw driving. A cockpit should reduce distraction, not add to it. If you're fiddling with menus mid-corner, the designers missed the point.
