Welcome back. A lot of riders hear the same advice when a new motorcycle comes home, get through the first stretch gently, then go do a high-speed pull.
That sounds simple, but the real answer is narrower than that. A new engine does need a break-in period, but that does not mean you should pin the throttle or sit at top speed for long runs.
What matters is how the piston rings, cylinder wall, gearbox parts, and bearings wear into each other in the first few hundred miles. If you get that part wrong, you can end up with rougher shifting, higher oil use, or weaker sealing in the cylinder.

High speed is not the point

What people often call a high-speed pull is usually meant to load the engine harder so the piston rings seat against the cylinder wall. That part has some truth in it, but the key factor is controlled load, not a long period of very high road speed. On a 300 cc street bike in sixth gear, for example, high speed can mean the engine is turning at a steady high rpm for too long. That creates extra heat before the contact surfaces have fully settled. A better approach is to vary the rpm through the recommended range, then use short bursts of moderate acceleration and engine braking. That repeated pressure change helps the rings seat without holding the engine in one stressed condition.

The ring seal matters first

The break-in period is really about surface matching. A fresh cylinder wall still has a fine crosshatch pattern, and the piston rings need time under pressure to wear into that surface and form a tighter seal. If the load stays too light for too long, ring seating can take longer and combustion pressure may not press the rings outward firmly enough. If the load is too heavy too early, the heat and friction rise too fast. On a liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine, that can show up as a hotter running feel in traffic or a stronger burnt-oil smell after a hard ride. You want the middle ground, enough combustion pressure to help sealing, but not full-throttle stress for long stretches.

Gearbox parts are settling too

People focus on the cylinder, but the transmission is also wearing in. Gear teeth, shift forks, and clutch friction surfaces all go through an early matching phase. That is why many new motorcycles feel notchy between first and second gear at the start, then smoother after some use and an early oil change. If you spend the first stage doing repeated top-speed runs, you are not helping those parts much. You are mainly holding one gear and one rpm band. Instead, normal riding with frequent upshifts and downshifts gives the gearbox a wider range of contact conditions. On a six-speed bike used in city traffic and short highway stretches, that pattern usually does more for smoothness than one dramatic high-speed session.

Follow load, heat, and timing

The practical rule is simple. During the early break-in distance listed in your manual, avoid constant rpm, avoid long full-throttle pulls, and avoid lugging the engine at very low rpm in a tall gear. If your manual gives staged limits, such as a lower rpm cap for the first segment and a slightly higher cap for the next one, use those numbers. They are there because engineers already accounted for the materials, clearances, and cooling system on that specific engine. It also helps to fully warm the engine before using moderate acceleration, then let it cool normally after the ride. An early oil and filter change matters too, because the first drain often carries fine wear material from rings, gears, and clutch parts.
A lot of old advice survives because it contains one useful idea wrapped in one bad shortcut. New motorcycles do need changing load during break-in, but they do not need a long high-speed run just for the purpose of speed. If you ride with varied rpm, moderate throttle, proper warm-up, and attention to the manual, you are giving the engine the conditions it actually needs. So if someone tells you to go straight out and do a top-speed blast on a brand-new bike, you can skip the drama and ride it in the way the machine was built to handle.
