Europe’s automotive industry is entering a period of rapid technological change. Electric powertrains, connected vehicles, automated systems and new digital tools are transforming not only how cars are built, but also how they are serviced, diagnosed and repaired.
That shift is creating a growing skills challenge for the workforce. Many traditional automotive jobs are not disappearing, but the tasks within them are changing.
Mechanics increasingly need knowledge of high-voltage systems, software diagnostics, sensors and connected technologies alongside conventional mechanical skills.

Technical Roles Are Changing Fast

A new European initiative involving the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association is focusing on workers in technical and semi-skilled positions, particularly those corresponding to EQF levels 3–5.
These roles are especially important in maintenance and repair, where technological change can quickly make older training insufficient.
Instead of looking only at broad job titles, the project aims to analyse individual tasks and identify exactly which skills are becoming more important.
That approach could help training providers respond more quickly when technologies change.

Shorter, More Focused Training

One of the main ideas being developed is a system of micro-credentials.
Rather than requiring workers to complete an entirely new qualification, micro-credentials provide shorter courses focused on a specific skill or area of knowledge.
A technician, for example, might complete targeted training related to electric-vehicle systems, battery safety or digital diagnostics without returning to full-time education.
This could make reskilling easier for people who are already employed and cannot spend months away from work.

Recognition Will Be Crucial

Short courses are useful only if employers trust them.
The project is therefore examining how micro-credentials could be integrated into vocational education and training systems while maintaining consistent standards.
Important questions include how courses should be assessed, who should certify them and whether qualifications will be recognised across different employers or European countries.
Without clear quality controls, a large number of small certificates could become confusing rather than useful.

Electric Cars Change Repair Work

The transition to electric vehicles illustrates why new training is needed.
Battery-electric cars contain fewer traditional powertrain components, but they introduce high-voltage equipment, complex battery-management systems and different safety requirements.
Connected and increasingly automated vehicles add another layer. Fault finding may depend as much on interpreting software data as inspecting mechanical parts.
Repair businesses will therefore need workers capable of combining traditional workshop knowledge with digital and electrical expertise.

Industry and Education Need to Cooperate

Another objective is to bring car manufacturers, training providers and other organisations closer together.
Technology can evolve faster than formal education programmes. By the time a conventional qualification is redesigned and approved, the skills required in workshops may already have changed again.
Closer cooperation could allow training systems to respond more rapidly to emerging technologies and real workplace needs.

A Workforce Issue as Well as a Technology Issue

Europe’s automotive transition is often discussed in terms of electric-vehicle production, factories and charging infrastructure. But the availability of skilled workers will be equally important.
A new technology has limited value if there are not enough people able to install, maintain and repair it safely.
Flexible retraining could also help existing automotive workers remain in the industry instead of being displaced as older technologies decline.
Europe’s automotive transformation will therefore depend not only on building cleaner and smarter vehicles, but also on ensuring that the people who work with them can continuously update their skills.
