On a warm afternoon, when plain water feels uninspiring and sugary drinks seem too heavy, lemon sparkling water becomes the perfect middle ground—light, bright, and refreshing without being complicated.
The good news is that you do not need special skills or fancy equipment to make it at home. With the right ingredients and a few simple techniques, you can create a drink that tastes clean and vibrant every single time.

Ingredients You Will Need

1. Fresh lemons
Choose firm, heavy lemons with smooth, bright yellow skin. Heavier lemons usually contain more juice. For one large glass (about 300–350 ml), half to one whole lemon is sufficient, depending on how tart you like it.
2. Chilled sparkling water
Use unflavored sparkling water or soda water. It should be well chilled before use, ideally stored in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours. Cold sparkling water retains carbonation better and delivers a crisper taste.
3. Ice cubes
Ice keeps the drink cold and refreshing. Use clean, odor-free ice made from filtered water for the best flavor.
Optional additions include a teaspoon of honey or a few fresh mint leaves, but the classic version requires only lemon and sparkling water.

Step-by-Step Preparation

1. Prepare the lemon
Rinse the lemon thoroughly under running water. If you want a cleaner flavor, lightly scrub the peel to remove surface residue. Roll the lemon gently on the countertop with your palm before cutting; this helps release more juice. Slice it in half and remove any visible seeds.
2. Juice cleanly
Squeeze the lemon into a small bowl first rather than directly into the glass. This makes it easy to remove seeds and control the amount of juice. Try not to squeeze the peel too aggressively, as it can add bitter notes.
3. Assemble the drink
Fill a tall glass about two-thirds full with ice. Add 15–30 ml of fresh lemon juice, depending on preference. Slowly pour chilled sparkling water over the ice. Pouring gently along the side of the glass helps preserve carbonation. Stir lightly once—do not overmix, as excessive stirring reduces the bubbles.
Taste and adjust. If it is too tart, add a small amount of honey and stir gently until dissolved. If it feels too mild, add a splash more lemon juice.

Precautions for Best Results

1. Control acidity
Lemon juice is naturally acidic. If you have a sensitive stomach, start with a smaller amount of juice and increase gradually. Drinking through a straw can also help reduce direct contact with teeth, protecting enamel.
2. Preserve carbonation
Open sparkling water just before use. Once opened, it gradually loses fizz. If you are preparing multiple servings, keep the bottle sealed between pours and refrigerated.
3. Avoid metallic flavors
Use glass or stainless steel utensils when juicing. Reactive metals can subtly affect the flavor. Also, consume the drink immediately after preparation; letting it sit too long weakens both flavor and bubbles.
