Northeast Greenland National Park is the largest protected area in the world. It covers vast Arctic wilderness with fjords, glaciers, mountains, and ice. Kjerulf Fjord lies inside this protected zone.
There are no towns, roads, ticket counters, or fixed opening hours. It is not a normal tourist site. Access is controlled to protect nature. Most visitors enter through organized expedition cruises or approved travel operators. A permit from Greenland authorities is required before entry.

When Is the Best Time to Visit

Best Season: July and August
- These two months offer the most suitable conditions for travel. Sea ice partly melts, making boat access possible. Wildlife activity increases, and daylight lasts longer.
- Outside this period, heavy ice and extreme cold make travel difficult or impossible. Most expedition programs operate only during summer.

Permit Requirements and Entry Rules

A government permit is mandatory for entering the national park. Independent travelers who plan to sail or camp must apply in advance. Approval usually takes time, so applications should be submitted months before departure.
If we book an organized cruise, the operator usually handles the permit process. In that case, permission is included in the travel package.
There is no ticket booth or entrance ticket price. The main requirement is legal authorization to access the protected area.

Transportation and Travel Costs

Expedition Cruises
The most common way to reach Kjerulf Fjord is by joining an Arctic expedition cruise. These trips usually last 10 to 12 days.
Estimated prices:
- Basic cabin packages often start around $9,000 to $11,000 per person.
- Premium cabins or longer routes can reach $24,000 or more per person.
The package usually includes accommodation, meals, guided excursions, and safety support.
Flights to Greenland
Travelers must first fly to Greenland, usually via Iceland or Denmark. Round trip flight prices often range from about $650 to $1,300 depending on departure city and season.
Local Boat Transfers
If traveling independently from nearby settlements, small boat charters are necessary. Private boat rental typically costs around $220 to $550 per day, depending on boat size and distance traveled.
There are no public ferries or fixed transport schedules inside the park.

Accommodation Options and Prices

Inside the National Park
There are no hotels, guesthouses, or commercial lodges inside Kjerulf Fjord or the park area. Visitors cannot book rooms there.
On Expedition Ships
Most travelers stay on cruise ships. The cabin price is included in the overall package cost. Meals, safety equipment, and guided tours are provided onboard.
Nearby Town Accommodation
Before or after the expedition, we may stay in small towns like Ittoqqortoormiit. Basic guesthouses usually cost around $55 to $165 per night. Facilities are simple but comfortable.
Camping
Camping is allowed only with special permission. All equipment, food, and fuel must be carried in. Campers must avoid disturbing wildlife and follow strict environmental protection rules.

Food and Dining Costs

On Cruise Ships
Meals are usually included in the expedition price. Travelers do not need to pay separately for daily food while onboard.
In Nearby Towns
- If we eat in local cafés or small restaurants before or after the trip, meals typically cost around $16 to $33 per person.
- Food supplies in remote Arctic towns are limited and imported, so grocery prices can be higher than in major cities.
Inside the fjord and park area, there are no restaurants or food services. Everything must be prepared in advance.

What to Expect During the Trip

Activities
Typical activities include:
- Sailing close to glaciers and iceberg fields
- Zodiac boat excursions for shoreline exploration
- Wildlife observation such as seals and birds
- Photography of dramatic mountain cliffs and floating ice
Guides often provide educational talks about geology, ice movement, and ecosystem changes.
Daily Extra Costs
If traveling independently, budget for:
- Boat charter fees around $220 to $550 per day
- Equipment rental if needed
- Travel insurance for emergency support
There are no hidden ticket fees, but logistics expenses are significant because of the remote location.

Practical Tips for Us

- Packing is very important. Even in summer, temperatures can drop quickly and strong winds may occur. We should bring layered clothing, waterproof jackets, warm gloves, and sturdy boots.
- Extra camera batteries are useful because cold weather drains power faster.
- Plans may change due to ice conditions or weather. Flexibility is necessary. Safety decisions made by expedition leaders should always be followed.

Final Thoughts

Kjerulf Fjord offers a true wilderness experience inside one of the most remote national parks in the world. Visiting requires permits, organized transport, and careful financial planning. There are no simple tickets or fixed opening hours — travel here is expedition-based.
Lykkers, have we ever imagined sailing through giant icebergs under endless daylight? With proper preparation, this Arctic journey can become an unforgettable adventure.
