Growing Emotional Distance

Have you ever noticed how, the older we get, the harder it feels for people to really understand what we're feeling inside? I definitely have. When we're kids, emotions seem more obvious and easier to share.
But as adults, it's like our feelings get more complicated — and sometimes, lonelier. Let me share what I've noticed from my own experience.

Why does emotional understanding get tricky?

As kids, we often express feelings openly — sadness, joy, anger — and people around us respond more directly. But growing up means facing more responsibilities, stress, and social expectations. I've realized that sometimes I hide my true feelings because I don't want to seem "too much" or "weak." Others might be doing the same, which creates a quiet distance between us.

How life changes our emotional world

With time, emotions get layered. For example, feeling tired might also include frustration or disappointment, all mixed together. It's not just one simple feeling anymore. I've found myself needing more time to understand what's really going on inside. Sometimes I don't even say what I feel because I'm not fully sure myself.

Why it matters to keep trying

Even if emotions feel confusing, it's important we keep trying to understand ourselves and each other. I've started sharing my feelings more honestly with close friends, and it's helped a lot. When we talk openly, even if feelings are messy, it builds connection — and that's what we all need.

How to make emotions easier to share

I try small things like naming my feelings out loud ("I feel overwhelmed" or "I'm a bit sad today"). Sometimes writing helps me too. If you're like me, you might find that sharing even a little bit makes a big difference. It's okay if you don't have all the answers right away — feelings take time.
